Path is an expansion of Sales Path (Sales Path was the former name, now it’s called Path) and it’s available in Lightning Experience. It’s also available for Opportunities in all versions of the Salesforce1™ Mobile App.
The reason it’s an expansion of Sales Path is because with Path, you can create a process around things like sales, leads, campaigns, contracts, orders, and custom objects. You can set up a Path for each available Record Type.
Benefits of Path
Reduces confusion — for your internal team and your customers. With a written process, you can always know who, what, when, how. No one has to guess.
Trains your team — while it’s not going to replace your current training process, it will certainly support and enhance it. It’s a consistent and ever-present way to educate your team on how things should be done and showcase your best practices.
Insight — detailing a path provides insights to everyone in the company. You’ll probably hear a lot of “I didn’t know that” as you share these processes with your entire organization.
Feedback and Flexibility — as you define your process, you’ll get valuable feedback from those “at the front line” so to speak. What you think it is and how it’s actually done may be two entirely different things. These insights are good to know and adjust for. Always more profitable to have everyone on the same page. Getting feedback also helps your team buy into the process and into Salesforce (user adoption).
Updates are easily and immediately accessible — if something in your process path changes, then you can update it here and it’s available for everyone all the time. No one has to try and remember what the new change is, no one has to spend time looking through a zillion emails to find out what the new process is, it’s all right here.
Path is available in Lightning, however, it’s not automatically configured in Lightning so it will need to be set up. Prior to creating a sales path, your Lead statuses and Opportunity stages must already be finalized.
- Go to Set Up Mode
- Search for “path” in the Quick Find box to find “path setting”
- Create a new Path or edit an existing Path
- You can have a different Path for each type of sale (ex: new vs. renewal)
- Enter the pick list values you want to use
- Enable “Remember User’s Path Preference”

You can even insert links into this area so that you can pro-vide additional detail for the coaching point shown. Here are some examples:
